I have found that some hand chains can be fairly costly to buy on the highstreet, and can often be very ill fitting. and though some of you might like to know how to make one for yourself.
for what they are, and high street alternatives can be very ill fitting.
Today I thought I would show you how to make your own simple hand chain at home.
- Flat nosed pliers x2
- Wire cutters
- Measuring Tape
- Cable chain
- A small charm
- 1 lobster clasp
- 4 small jumprings
- 1 medium sized jumpring
- An extension chain (optional)
In this example I made my own extension chain as I make all of my own for Moon Tide Jewellery. However, you can easily get a ready made one from your local bead shop.
As we are making one to fit your own wrist you may also feel like you don’t need to have the extension chain. I will warn you that they can be super tricky to put on if you don’t have an extension chain though!
First off you will need to measure the width of your wrist. Make a note of the measurement and take off a quarter of an inch. This is so that the bracelet part fits your wrist exactly as the fastening parts will add a little bit more room to the design. My wrist was about 5.5 inches so I wrote down 5.25 inches.
Next cut your chain so that you have two 3 inch long pieces, and cut another piece into one length you wrote down after measuring your wrists (I cut mine to 5.25 inches).
Take the length of chain which is the width of your wrists and cut it in half.
Now you should be left with three pieces of chain. We have all the parts now so we can begin!
Take one of the jumprings and open it by holding either side of the jumpring with your two pairs of pliers, with the opening at the center. Then gently pull one of the pliers towards you, so that the jumprings opens whilst you still keep its shape. Now slide on one of the ends of the 3 inch long pieces of chain, and then attach the other end of it, so you have a loop. Grab your other piece of 3 inch long chain and thread just one end onto the jumpring too.
Close the jumpring by holding it between two pliers again and moving the slide facing you back into place so that it is closed. You should hear a click, if not keep wiggling it gently until you hear it pop into place.
Now you should have the shape of the ring part and the part of the chain that connects to the bracelet, like above.
Grab another jumpring and open it the same way as you did with the first one. Pop onto it the end of the piece we have so far (pictured above). Then grab the two pieces of chain from the wrist and thread on the two ends of that. Close the jumpring and you should have something like we have pictured below.
Now take another jumpring, open it and add on the charm. You now what to thread this jumpring through the other one we’ve used to attach the chains for the wrist. This is to attach the charm in the middle of the bracelet. Close the jumpring.
Now you need to attach the clasp to one end of the bracelet and the larger jumpring and extension chain to the other end of the bracelet, as seen below.
Voila! We now have a trendy new hand chain. Put it on and admire your hands! If it is slightly too loose you can always cut off a little bit of chain down the length or from the bracelet section and reattach it.
There are loads of things you can do with this tutorial, such as add more charms, add more chain layers, or even experiment with using different chain styles or sizes. I’ll leave it up to you how you customise yours!
